The Beginning...
I was pondering today, tomorrow's (Sunday) message as I read today's proverb (1:7) when it struck me... this is the 'beginning' of it all, isn't it. Whether one accepts Gen. 1:1 (Creation) or John 1:1 (God of Creation), really begins with humility before the Lord. I do think that little bit of healthy fear of His wrath might do us a bit of good... but respecting His person is of greater worth.

It is interesting to think about the prohibition against eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in Genesis and the statement that fear is the beginning of knowledge in Proverbs.
ReplyDeleteAugustine differentiated between between the pursuit of knowledge about God and the disease of curiosity ... the desire for knowledge for its own sake. It makes sense to me that Augustine would think this way since he sees evil as a lack of good. If the intention of one seeking knowledge is not to use it to do something good, then it is missing the mark.
Here's the relevant section of The Confessions of Augustine, in case anyone is interested.
Back to the tree in Eden-do people think that the injunction was permanent or that an alternate course of events would have been for Adam and Eve to be gradually prepared for a time when God would then tell them they were ready to eat from the tree?
I believe the tree was a permanent issue for them and subsequently for future generations; particularly since they were instructed to be fruitful and multiply. Ultimately, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, was a proving ground for their love and devotion to God, as exampled by their obedience. Of course our obedience is an indication of our love... still yet, that tree action is somewhat perplexing... for particularly that it reappears in Revelation... (now figure that one out!)
